'DWTS' finale: Controversial winner, COVID restrictions and Tyra's last-minute wardrobe
The Season 29 winner of Dancing With the Stars was crowned Monday night and, to celebrate the finale, DWTS host Tyra Banks Zoomed into Yahoo Entertainment's Last Night Now, where she gave everyone a glimpse of the finale though her smizing eyes
The season came down to four finalists — Bachelorette star Kaitlyn Bristowe, rapper Nelly, MTV's Catfish host Nev Schulman and actress Justina Machado. During the finale, each contestant and their partner performed one repeat routine and one freestyle dance. While Bristowe, Schulman and Machado each received a perfect score of 60 points, Machado took fourth place, Nelly took third, and Schulman took second.
Bristowe and her partner Artem Chigvintsev are the Season 29 champions!
While Bachelor Nation was celebrating the win, many viewers on social media were really upset about Schulman’s runner-up finish. In fact, "Nev was robbed" was quickly trending on Twitter following the show,

We talked to Banks about the winning moment, during which, the host struggled to get a word in over the celebratory music and cheers. Banks told Last Night Now, "You know what? I never got a word in. I just was watching them, and Kaitlyn was just like this," said Banks as she physically reenacted Bristowe's expression. Banks added, "Artem was tearing up and I just didn't really get a moment because it was all just emotion, emotion, emotion, honestly." Unfortunately, Banks did not get a chance to speak to any of the contestants following the show.
"You know what's so interesting? It's very challenging because I want to hug everybody. You want to, like, caress, and say, 'You did such a good job,' but there are COVID restrictions, and I follow them to the letter. I live with my mom and she's a senior citizen." Banks went on to say that, while she wanted to talk to everyone and celebrate with them, it just wasn't "like normal.
"It's just a different time right now."
Overall, the DWTS finale night was filled with terrific performances. As for which performance of the night was her favorite, Banks shared that she loved all of the freestyle dances the most. "I loved Justina, when they multiplied her, it was a very Beyoncé moment, when she's, like, all over the place. I loved the 'Singing in the Rain' with Nev, and then Kaitlyn with 'Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend,' I wanted to be on the swing with her, and Nelly, his swag, it was like a rap video," said Banks.
Other than engaging performances, Banks availed herself of multiple wardrobe changes throughout the night. However, viewers will be surprised to learn that all her gowns were only planned one hour before the show went live. "I was not able to do a fitting this week," shared Banks. Asked what she would have done had none if the outfits didn’t work, Banks said she would have had to improvise. Banks stated, "Jeans and a T-shirt and would've made it work. And said, 'We're stripping it raw and real, baby. And, you know, I'm keeping it real tonight so that all the glitter and glitz,' you know, I would've figured it out."
As for whether or not Banks had a feeling Bristowe would be named the Season 29 champion, Banks admitted, "I had a feeling she would be a final finalist. I felt it. She's got that technical thing. She knows what she's doing."
The Season 29 finale of Dancing With the Stars aired November 23rd at 8 p.m. on ABC.
