Dylan Dreyer Documents Nearly Disastrous Mishap With Kids
Two days before the Fourth of July, the Dreyer family had their own sparks flying in their kitchen, as evidenced by a video that Dylan Dreyer shared with fans on social media.
The NBC meteorologist explained that the nearly disastrous mishap was inspired by a wish to celebrate her son Oliver’s half birthday. Her middle child turned 4 on January 2, and to mark the halfway point between his fourth and fifth birthdays, Dreyer obtained a “cool candle” that she later realized “was apparently an indoor firework that probably should have been used outside!”
In the video shared on Instagram on Wednesday, July 3, the Today show co-host aimed her camera at Oliver as he watched an indoor firework as it was set off while planted in the center of a piece of cake. The cake, which was on a plate that had been placed on the kitchen counter several inches away from the 4-year-old, had sparks erupting above it as Oliver and his brothers watched.
After Dreyer, 42, finished singing “Happy Birthday” to Oliver, he asked if he should attempt to blow the “candle” out. “I think it blows itself out,” his mother answered.
Dreyer’s oldest son, Calvin, then noted, “That is so dangerous,” a comment that drew a laugh from Dreyer. The 7-year-old then requested one of his own for his next birthday.
Once the firework stoped sparking, Oliver flashed a smile as the video ended. A photo that Dreyer included in her post after the video showed the firework mid-spark as Oliver pressed both hands to his ears and her youngest son, 2-year-old Rusty, looked on.
The video divided fans on social media, with some Instagram users reprimanding Dreyer for lighting it inside and others laughing over the mix-up between a candle and an indoor firework.
"What would happen if you caught your building on fire? Common Dylan use common sense!!!” one fan chided.
“I was so nervous watching the candle ??,” another fan admitted while one person said it looked to them as if Oliver was “afraid to blow it out.”
A few fans quoted Calvin’s “that is so dangerous” note before adding laughing emojis to their own comments. Others admitted they too have made the same mistake.
“?? I bought the same thing for my granddaughter’s cake not realizing it was for outside,” one person laughed.
“Way to go mommy ??,” one Instagram user joked as another declared Dreyer the “Boy Mom of the Year!”
“Pyrotechnics mom! ?? ??,” another fan teased before adding, “Happy half birthday Ollie!”
