Dylan Sprouse Says It 'Sucked' Being Separated from Twin Brother Cole During “Riverdale” Era
"I just didn't get to see my brother as often," Dylan said of his twin brother's time on the CW show
Dylan Sprouse wasn't jealous when Cole Sprouse booked Riverdale – in fact, the major emotion he was feeling was sadness at their separation.
During an interview on SiriusXM's Andy Cohen Live on August 1, Dylan reflected on the six years his twin spent shooting Riverdale. Although Andy Cohen thought the actor might have felt envious of his twin's project, Dylan felt the exact opposite.
"I would say that the biggest thing that sucked was that I just didn't get to see my brother as often," Dylan, 31, recalled. "He was up in Vancouver filming that."
Calling Riverdale, which aired from 2017 to 2023, a "moody, strange show," Dylan revealed that the filming schedule – "mostly night shoots in a town that's virtually dead – a ghost town" – was hard on his brother.
Despite knowing what Cole "was getting into, signing up to a CW network television show in Vancouver," Dylan said, "He wasn't a huge fan, realistically, of the time spent up there, even though he loves his cast and crew he loves everybody."
"But it was a tough shoot, man. I think anyone would say that."
The CW show — which also starred KJ Apa, Camila Mendes, Lili Reinhart and Madelaine Petsch — concluded almost exactly a year ago, with the season 7 finale airing on Aug. 23. And while it was an emotional farewell, Cole had previously said he was ready for his next chapter.
The 31-year-old Friends alum told GQ in 2022 that he and his costars were ready to "wrap [the show] up with a bow" as he shared frustration over the lack of "creative control" he had on the show.
"We show up, receive the scripts often the day of, and we're asked to shoot," he told the outlet.
Regardless, though, Cole has acknowledged the "huge opportunity" that the show, based on the Archie comics, offered him. He told Entertainment Tonight in 2021 that he's "very lucky that people took to the show," which has been a "wild ride."
Now that the series has come to an end, though, Dylan — who is currently starring in The Duel — is hoping he and his twin can work together again sometime soon, but admitted that it can be tough to find the right roles.
"There's not very many good roles for twins in general," he said on Live with Kelly and Mark on July 31. "It's usually pretty hokey. I remember Cole distinctly being kind of bitter about Tom Hardy being a twin [in 2015's Legend]. He doesn't like when people play two different people. I looked at him and I was like, 'Cole, I don't think they were looking for guys like us to play that role anyway if they're hiring Tom Hardy."
