After stepping away from the limelight for a number of years, beloved comedian Eddie Murphy is back and ready for a career renaissance. He's got a stand up special with Netflix hitting in 2020 and his performance in Dolemite Is My Name is earning awards' buzz ahead of the film's release.
Regrets Over Past Jokes
Murphy sat down with The New York Times in a wide ranging interview that covered his past work as well as the state of comedy today. While many male comedians lament the "death of comedy" thanks to "PC culture," Murphy expresses a degree of regret over some of the jokes made in Raw and Delirious, particularly the ones that were disparaging towards women and members of the LGBT community.
When Raw comes up, Murphy "cringes" at the "cocky" jokes in the special.
"I was a young guy processing a broken heart, you know, kind of an asshole."
What Can We Expect From Murphy Now?
Murphy explains that he apologized for many of the jokes back in 1996, releasing a statement that read:
"I deeply regret any pain all this has caused. I know how serious an issue AIDS is the world over [and] that AIDS isn’t funny. …I’m a lot smarter about AIDS now."
So, what can fans expect from his new special? According to Murphy, time and experience has softened him a bit.
"I’m mushier than I used to be. I now have a whole lifetime of experiences to draw upon. There was a time when I was at the center of everything, what I was doing, and how funny I was and how popular. I’m not at the center. Now my kids are and everything revolves around them."
