Editors 2024 Emmy nominations slugfest: ‘Shogun,’ ‘The Bear’ dominate … ‘The Curse,’ ‘The Great Lillian Hall’ get skunked [WATCH]
The 2024 Emmy nominations were announced Wednesday, July 17 and Gold Derby editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon, Daniel Montgomery and Ray Richmond were up early to discuss their reactions to surprises (or lack thereof), snubs and early front-runners. Leading the charge are “Shogun” in the drama categories, “The Bear” in comedy and “True Detective: Night Country” for limited series.
“It was a great morning for FX,” Davidson begins, noting “Shogun’s” 25 bids, followed by “The Bear” with 23, the most ever for a comedy series. Other big contenders this year are “Only Murders in the Building” with 21 nominations and “The Crown” with 18 — up from just six last year. “I really loved the final season season, especially the series finale. It was fantastic,” Dixon comments.

Our Gold Derby odds were spot-on predicting Best Comedy Series, correctly forecasting all eight nominees. “I was glad to see ‘Reservation Dogs’ get one in it’s last season,” Richmond reflects. “We had been predicting it, but it still underperformed in its first couple of seasons. Now it got this one and it got D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai also.” Dixon adds, “I thought ‘Loot’ would have a good shot here, but it got left out here, unfortunately.”
Montgomery notes, “For all the new shows that got into Best Drama Series, ‘Palm Royale’ is the only freshman show that got into Best Comedy Series, and it’s the most nominated freshman comedy with 11 nominations.” Our odds also went six-for-six in Best Comedy Actress, with Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”) and Maya Rudolph (“Loot”) both getting in for their shows for the first time.
Despite “The Bear’s” dominance, it did miss out on a few key nominations. “I thought for sure Abby Elliott would get in,” Dixon admits. I’m extremely shocked to see her off.” Also missing out from “The Bear” were Oliver Platt and Matty Matheson, replaced by Paul W. Downs (“Hacks”) and Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”). Davidson notices, “You have to be cookin’ in the kitchen to get a nomination for ‘The Bear.'”
SEE 50 most unforgivable Emmy nomination snubs: ‘The Curse,’ Emma Stone, Theo James …
Perhaps the morning’s biggest snub was Showtime’s drama “The Curse,” which failed to earn a single bid, despite Oscar winner Emma Stone‘s fourth-place ranking in our odds. Davidson calls it the morning’s “biggest loser,” noting many considered the season finale “Green Queen” one of the best episodes of television this year.
Just like “The Bear” in comedy, “Shogun” did miss some “gettable” noms in the Best Drama Supporting Actress category. Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido were both predicted to get in, but were replaced by “The Morning Show’s” Holland Taylor, Nicole Beharie and Karen Pittman, who ranked lower in our odds. “What’s interesting is that those missed nominations for ‘Shogun’ kept it from another record,” Montgomery reveals. “It missed the record for most first-year nominations for a series. ‘NYPD Blue’ had 27 in its first season. If it had gotten two or three extra acting nominations it would have broken that record.”
One shocking snub that had the editors reeling was Oscar winner Jessica Lange for her performance in “The Great Lillian Hall.” Richmond exclaims, “I am completely shocked by that! But it was because it was such a late entrant. People probably just didn’t watch it.” Davidson pushes back, responding, “We’ve talked about this before. They just don’t nominate actors in this category that’s combined with limited series. With Jessica Lange missing out, Kathy Bates missing out, Tony Shalhoub missing out…these are people they love to give awards to. If none of them can get in for a movie, I refuse to predict someone from a movie in this category ever again.”
