Elizabeth Hurley Reveals Her Discomfort With Being the Poster Girl for Aging Gracefully
At 58, Elizabeth Hurley is living her best life. She showcases her latest bikini designs for Elizabeth Hurley Beach on her Instagram page and her career is thriving with her April 2024 project, Strictly Confidential, directed by her son, Damian Hurley, 22, creating lots of buzz. Her 50s decade has been successful for her, but there’s one topic that sort of makes her uncomfortable: aging gracefully.
Naturally, reporters want her thoughts on getting older because Hurley looks stunning and she’s in great physical shape. The Sydney Morning Herald decided to ask Hurley how she felt about the “‘Liz has found the fountain of youth at 58’-type headlines” since it’s a pretty common occurrence. And there appears to be some “discomfort” to the overall topic in her reaction, but she doesn’t shy away from her powerful response.

“Well, there is such an obsession with men and women who hold up better than others. I mean, it’s pretty insulting to people who maybe aren’t being put in the camp of, ‘Wow, they’re holding up well.’ None of us really know why it works better for some people,” Hurley said. She’s not wrong because some celebrities are going to take better care of themselves than others, and the term “aging gracefully” is going to mean different things to each individual. For some, that’s going to mean focusing on their fitness or healthy eating habits while others might explore injectables and other cosmetic surgery options — it’s not a one-size-fits-all all answer.
What Hurley is open to talking about is ageism in fashion which societal norms love to dictate, especially with women. She edits her wardrobe differently than when she was 25, but she doesn’t want anyone to feel “judged” for their style choices. It’s completely absurd if people think they can’t put a bikini on and enjoy being on the beach because people might think their body looks too old,” Hurley told SheKnows in 2022. “I mean, that’s just obscene. It’s a terrible point of view.” She believes it’s time for people to embrace the idea that “women should do whatever the hell they want to do” when it comes to fashion. And for added emphasis, she noted, “And damn anybody criticizing them.”
Hurley’s fashion icon status might have started with a Versace safety-pin dress, but it’s certainly not ending anytime soon. She’s keeping her style crown through every season of life.
