Update: In December 2020, Elliot Page came out as trans and announced that they use he/they pronouns. This content was written in August 2015, before Page publicly announced that they are trans.

Ellen Page confronted Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz about gay rights on Friday, as the senator was grilling hamburgers at the Iowa state fair.

“What about the question about LGBT people being fired for being gay or trans?” Page, 28, asked during the exchange caught by ABC News (see video below).

“Well, what we’re seeing right now, we’re seeing Bible-believing Christians being persecuted for living according to their faith,” Cruz said.

“You’re discriminating against LGBT people,” Page, who came out as a lesbian last year, said. “Well, would you use that argument in segregation?”

“Now I’m happy to answer your question, but not to have a back-and-forth debate,” said Cruz, who has said he is against gay marriage.

Page is covering the campaign trail for Vice.
