Elsbeth is getting a visitor from her Good Wife past, and it’s not a welcome one.

At the end of last week’s Season 2 premiere, the titular lawyer was told by an unseen voice to get in a black SUV. The mystery man returns in this Thursday’s episode (CBS, 10/9c), which reveals that he is Carter Schmidt (played by Christian Borle), a lawyer who often went up against Alicia Florrick in the courtroom on The Good Wife. (In addition to appearing on five episodes of The Good Wife, Borle was also in three installments of The Good Fight.)

Carter has a professional history with Elsbeth Tascioni from their days in the Windy City, and seeing him again turns the redhead’s day “upside down,” reads the official episode description.

In the above exclusive sneak peek, Carter issues a warning to Elsbeth concerning their past. “I’m sure the NYPD views rules of confidentiality just as seriously as we do,” he says. After Carter clarifies that the “we” refers to “the firm,” he adds, “If a former colleague who was handsomely paid for her work violated that confidence, the firm would exact retribution.”

When Elsbeth questions what kind of retribution, Carter ominously replies, “Financial, professional. Other things I’m not thinking about right now. As an old friend from Chicago, I wanted you to know.”

Elsewhere in the episode, “when a billionaire dies in a freak accident during a space training simulation, Elsbeth suspects a fellow magnate and wannabe astronaut with a grudge named Neal (Robert Riggle) is responsible.”
