PONIES marks Clarke’s third major TV role since wrapping her eight-season run as Daenerys “khaleesi” Targaryen on HBO’s Game of Thrones; she has since played G’iah on Disney+’s Secret Invasion and also has the Prime Video heist thriller Criminal in the pipeline.

Co-created by David Iserson (Mr. Robot, The Spy Who Dumped Me) and Susanna Fogel (The Spy Who Dumped Me, Chasing Life) and set in Moscow circa 1977, the spy drama follows two “PONIES” (“persons of no interest” in intelligence speak) who work anonymously as secretaries in the American Embassy — that is, until their husbands are killed under mysterious circumstances in the USSR, and the two become CIA operatives.

Bea, played by Clarke, is described as the “over-educated, Russian-speaking child of Soviet immigrants,” whereas her yet-to-be-cast cohort, Twila, is “a small-town girl who is as abrasive as she is fearless.”

“Together, they work to uncover a vast Cold War conspiracy,” the synopsis tells us, “and solve the mystery that made them widows in the first place.”

Fogel will serve as an executive producer, director, and co-writer alongside co-writer/showrunner Iserson. Clarke and Jessica Rhoades are also executive producers, while Alison Mo Massey and Katherine Bridle will serve as co-executive producers.
