“Please watch movies in the original version, at least the ones in which I appear,” the trans actress posted on X, the micro-blogging platform formerly known as Twitter.
In her statement, Gascón said, “Please, watch movies in their original version with subtitles, it’s not the same. It’s inevitable; the dubbing changes the acting. I love dubbing, but doing it myself, not watching dubbed movies.”
“They have given me an older woman’s voice imitating Mrs. Doubtfire,” Gascón continued. “It’s rare that they can find a voice that is similar to mine. In general, I feel that they are close with Manitas, but with Emilia they have a voice that pretends to imitate, and it takes me out, they age me as an actress.”
Gascón said she was advocating for the “acting ability” and questioned why it had “to be a single person who dubs” or someone from the LGBT community.
“If an actress comes closer to my voice, what is the problem? The voices of my co-stars are perfect. Mine are pure imitation, very few fit me. I’m sorry but that is my impression,” she added.
It’s unclear what dubbed version Gascón is referring to. Deadline has reached out to her reps and Netflix for clarification.
Emilia Pérez is a musical crime drama written and directed by Jacques Audiard. The film stars Gascón, Zoe Salda?a, Selena Gomez, Adriána Paz, Mark Ivanir, and Edgar Ramírez. Gascón stars as a cartel leader who enlists a lawyer to help her disappear and transition into a woman.
