‘Emilia Perez’ final trailer: Netflix pulls back the curtain on top Oscars contender
“Emilia Perez” will screen at the New York Film Festival on Monday night, ending a whirlwind festival run that started way back in the spring when the ambitious project premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. To unofficially celebrate the milestone, Netflix debuted the full final trailer for the Jacques Audiard film, one that most awards experts expect to receive several top nominations, including Best Picture.
Here’s the Netflix boilerplate for the genre-blending musical crime drama: “From renegade auteur Jacques Audiard comes ‘Emilia Pérez,’ an audacious fever dream that defies genres and expectations. Through liberating song and dance and bold visuals, this odyssey follows the journey of four remarkable women in Mexico, each pursuing their own happiness. The fearsome cartel leader Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón) enlists Rita (Zoe Salda?a), an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, to help fake her death so that Emilia can finally live authentically as her true self. Written & directed by Audiard (‘Rust and Bone,’ ‘A Prophet’), the double Cannes-winning film also stars Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Edgar Ramírez.”

“Emilia Perez” won two awards at the Cannes Film Festival: a jury prize and Best Actress for its four main stars (Gascon, Saldana, Gomez, and Paz). The film is a top contender for Best Picture and Best Director nominations, with Gascon widely predicted to make history as the first trans actress nominated for Best Actress. Saldana and Gomez are expected to factor strongly in the Best Supporting Actress race. “Emilia Perez” was chosen by France to represent the country in the Best International Feature race. Its original songs, including “El Mal” (which is heard in the trailer), are by Clément Ducol and Camille. Expect one or two nominations in that category at the Oscars as well.
Netflix acquired “Emilia Perez” after the Cannes debut. The streamer has positioned it as its top title, screening it at film festivals in Telluride, Toronto, and New York. “Emilia Perez” finished runner-up in the Toronto People’s Choice Award voting to “The Life of Chuck.”
After its New York Film Festival screening, “Emilia Perez” will continue through the regional film festival circuit, hitting the Montclair Film Festival and likely the Middleburg Film Festival in October.
“Emilia Perez” debuts in select theaters on November 1. Netflix will premiere the project on November 13.
