Days before the fall festival season launches, Netflix dropped the first teaser for “Emilia Perez,” Jacques Audiard’s award-winning musical crime drama expected to be a major factor in the Oscar race.
Netflix acquired “Emilia Perez” after its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in the spring. The film won Audiard the fest’s Jury Prize, while stars Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz shared the Cannes Best Actress honor.

Here’s the film’s logline, provided by Netflix: Writer-director Jacques Audiard’s ‘Emilia Pérez’ tells the story of high-powered lawyer Rita (Salda?a) who takes on an unexpected assignment: helping a Mexican cartel leader (Gascón) fake their death and undergo sex-reassignment operations.
“You have a musical that is not a musical, an action movie that’s not an action movie, a drama that’s not a drama, a comedy that’s not a comedy,” Gascón told Netflix’s proprietary website Tudum in an interview published Monday alongside the teaser. “It is such a great gift, and I’m so proud to be part of it.”
“Emilia Perez” will debut in select theaters on November 1 before hitting Netflix on November 13. But the film will be a fixture at festivals in September and October, with appearances at the Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival already confirmed. “Emilia Perez” is widely expected to have its North American debut at the Telluride Film Festival this week. However, in keeping with its tradition, Telluride organizers won’t announce the full slate until Thursday.
