Emma Thompson Tries to Be a ‘White Savior’ in New ‘Late Night’ Trailer (Video)
Emma Thompson’s character in “Late Night” is “a little old and a little white,” according to her young, person-of-color writer played by Mindy Kaling. And Kaling has an idea of what she can do about that.
In the comedy, Emma Thompson plays a long-running talk show host named Katherine Newberry who has gotten stale and behind the times, so in the latest trailer for the film, Kaling’s character helps her introduce a new segment: “White Savior.”
Thompson hits the streets and meets two black people who say they can never successfully hail a cab. Thompson manages to flag one down in an instant.

“I actually didn’t need to go anywhere,” the man says. “That doesn’t matter, this is how white saviors work.”
Nisha Ganatra directed “Late Night” from a script by Kaling, and Kaling and Thompson co-star in the film alongside Ike Barinholtz, John Lithgow, Amy Ryan, Paul Walter Hauser, Reid Scott, Hugh Dancy, Max Casella and Denis O’Hare.
“Late Night” was a hit at Sundance earlier this year, and Amazon scooped the film up for $13 million. The film’s director Ganatra has already landed a new studio film, a romance called “Covers” at Universal. But first, “Late Night” will be in theaters on June 7.
