Emmy farewell hug for ‘The Crown’?
Netflix’s “The Crown” could be set to join an exclusive Emmys club by winning the award for Best Drama Series for its final season.
The period show wrapped up late last year by exploring the death of Diana, the Princess of Wales; the premiership of Tony Blair; and the wedding between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. This sixth season saw the return of Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Phillip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki asDiana. The show earned rave reviews.

This final season of the show reaped six Primetime Emmy bids including Best Drama Series. “The Crown” won this top prize in 2021 for its fourth season and has been nominated in this category for every single one of its six editions. This proves what a popular, respected show it is by Emmy voters.
This year it contends alongside”Fallout,” “The Gilded Age,” “The Morning Show,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” “Shōgun,” “Slow Horses,” and “3 Body Problem.” “The Crown” is just behind “Shōgun” in our odds. If “The Crown” were to pip “Shōgun” to the post, it would become the sixth show to win Best Drama Series for its final season. The others are listed below.*

It should be noted that “Breaking Bad” won Best Drama Series in both 2013 and 2014. Both of those came for its fifth season, which was split into two parts. (“Elizabeth R” was a limited series that won this category in 1972 and “The Bold Ones: The Senator” was an entire series that won in 1971.)
“The Crown” has a good shot at accomplishing this feat. It is also nominated for Best Drama Actress for Staunton, Best Drama Actor for West, Best Drama Supporting Actor for Pryce, and Best Drama Supporting Actress for both Debicki and Manville. This shows that Emmy voters have embraced this final season and strongly admire it.
It has wide-reaching support and has been one of the most significant shows of the past decade. The fact that it has only ever won one Best Drama Series prize when the likes of “Game of Thrones” won four and “Breaking Bad” won two (two other hugely important shows) may mean that voters will want to reward this drama series one more time while they still can. Conversely, “Shōgun” is nominated for its first season. There will be more time to reward that show in the future. This is Emmy voters’ last chance to show some love to “The Crown.”
