Emmys 2024: “The Bear”, “Shōgun ”and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” Lead the Pack with Guest Actor and Actress Wins

On Sunday, Sept. 8, four actors earned trophies at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys for their guest roles in their respective comedy and drama series.
From winning their first-ever Emmy to looking back on their days selling "yogurt that makes you s--- for seven years," see who won the prestigious awards — and what they said afterwards.
Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series: Néstor Carbonell
Carbonell won the first guest actor trophy of the evening for his role as Vasco Rodrigues in FX's Shōgun. The historical drama series, based on James Clavell’s best-selling novel of the same name, follows two ambitious men from different corners of the world and their unlikely alliance as one fends off his opponents who plot to overthrow him.
After taking the stage, the Lost alum, 56, immediately thanked his wife Shannon. "Shannon is an actress who worked for 25 years in this industry in film and television and theater, and when our second son was born, she stepped away from it in favor of full-time motherhood so that I could pursue what I love to do," he said. "I share this with you, honey."
Carbonell also thanked his manager, agent, and the team behind Shōgun. "You're all here. You're all love. Thank you for your incredible talents," he said, later adding, "I love the team sport of this and I'm so glad we get to be here together. Thank you all so much. I appreciate it."
In the press room, Carbonell further expressed his gratitude for the prestigious award, calling the moment "full circle."
"This is overwhelming. You work as an actor for as long as I have, and the role is a gift... some years are good and some years you're just trying to piece together," he said. "And I know we're going through a hard time collectively in this industry and so you count your blessings when you are working. But to get something like this, it's not something I think about, but it is particularly meaningful to me because my first job in television was as a guest star on Law & Order. And it's a little full circle today because as soon as I finish giving out or presenting those three awards, I have to hop on a plane — I get to hop on a plane to finish directing an episode of Law & Order. Alex Hall is covering me for the first shot the morning, but so that is incredibly meaningful to me and very full circle. Thank you."

Nestor Carbonell as Rodrigues in 'Shogun'Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series: Michaela Coel
Michaela Coel took home the guest actress award for her role in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, in which she plays Bev, a spy working for a rival company of John Smith (Donald Glover). The Prime Video series is a remake of exes Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's 2005 action-comedy of the same name.
Coel was not in attendance to receive her award on Sept. 8, so Carbonell, who was presenting the category, accepted the trophy on her behalf.

Jon Bernthal won outstanding guest actor in a comedy series for his role in The Bear. The actor plays Mikey Berzatto, the brother of Carmen (Jeremy Allen White) and Sugar (Abby Elliot) and son of Donna Berzatto (Jamie Lee Curtis), in the FX/Hulu series.
The 47-year-old actor earned a nomination for his role in episode 6 of season 2, titled "Fishes," which documented the chaotic holiday gathering of the Berzatto family.
He was not present at the Sept. 8 awards ceremony, but the award marks his first-ever Emmys win.

Jon Bernthal in 'The Bear'Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series: Jamie Lee Curtis
Jamie Lee Curtis wowed audiences as Donna Berzatto in The Bear, and earned the outstanding guest actress in a comedy series award as a result. Her character is the mother of Carmen, Sugar and Mikey. She struggles with alcoholism and what appears to be Borderline Personality Disorder — something that is quite clear in the "Fishes" episode while Donna is preparing Christmas Eve dinner.
Taking the stage after her name was announced, Curtis, 65, told the crowd, "You know there’s a saying, 'Hurt people, hurt people,' but I also think you can add to that and say, 'Helped people help people,' and I think that’s the story of The Bear."
"It's astonishing that I got this opportunity at this point in my life," she continued, before calling the show's cast and crew "the ingredients of this beautiful, beautiful, beautiful piece of television ... that I'm privileged to be in."

Curtis later expressed her gratitude in the press room, telling reporters that she felt like "the luckiest girl in the world" after winning the prestigious award. She also looked back on her time starring in Activia yogurt commercials and joked about how far she had come since.
"I've been an actor since I was 19. I'm 65," she said. "I've sold yogurt that makes you s--- for seven years. And I just never thought in my life that I would get to do work at this level of depth and complexity and intelligence. And it's just been the thrill of my creative life these last couple of years that I get these opportunities. So I'm humble and incredibly grateful."
When asked about achieving EGOT status one day, Curtis brushed off the possibility – at least for now.
"Well, I can't sing at all, and I've never been on stage, actually. I've never done a play, and so I can't imagine," she responded. "I don't stay up that late... I don't know if any of you ever paid attention to anything I've said, but at my age, about concerts being so late and why can't Bruce Springsteen do a frickin' matinee?"
"So I am just not sure I would do so well in the theater since you go to bed so late," she quipped. "But you know what? I never thought any of this was going to be possible in my life at all."
