Emmys: Billy Crudup Uses Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Speech To Praise Wife Naomi Watts

Billy Crudup earned his second Emmy win Sunday night for his role in Apple TV+’s The Morning Show.

The 56-year-old actor took to the stage to accept the best supporting actor in a drama series award at the 2024 Emmys and immediately offered praise to his wife, fellow Emmy nominee Naomi Watts. “I’m happy to be here with my piece of eye candy there,” Crudup said to kick off his speech.

“My wife, who also happens to be an immigrant and also gave a searing performance for which she’s nominated, and she starts businesses too, so it’s nice to be by her side,” he continued. Watts is nominated for best actress in a limited series or anthology for her role as Babe Paley in FX’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.

After his win, Crudup offered quippy answer to press when asked if he and Watts competed with one another. “We’re quite competitive but at like Scrabble,” he joked.

Crudup also took the time to thank “the writers and the educators” who allowed him to do the writing that was beyond his level. He also took the time to thank those working behind the scenes on the show, offering a sincere parting message to his co-workers. “This process has been incredible for me,” he started. “I hope everybody else who is involved knows how much it means to me.”

Crudup also noted that he and his character shared no similarities. “There’s no Billy in there,” he said. “Billy, as you can see, is sweaty and stumbles over words.”

Sunday night’s win marks the second for Crudup for his work on The Morning Show. The actor last won in 2020.

The 76th annual Emmy Awards, co-hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, are broadcasting live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles from 5-8 p.m. PT/8-11 p.m. ET. See all the red carpet arrivals.
