Emmys: ‘The Morning Show’ reaped 4 nominations in a single category
Based on the merits of its first two seasons, Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” was nominated for three of the four regular drama series acting Emmys, with its lone elusive category having been the supporting female one. Now, following its submission of seven featured ladies on the initial 2024 Emmy ballot, it has simultaneously scored a whopping four Best Drama Supporting Actress mentions, joining only three other series that have done the same or better.
The supporting actresses representing “The Morning Show” on this year’s final Emmy ballot are Nicole Beharie, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman, and Holland Taylor. Only Pittman has been part of the cast since the show’s inception, as Lee and Taylor first appeared in season two and Beharie was just added ahead of season three. All are Emmy newcomers except Taylor, whose eight earlier nominations led to a single win in this category for “The Practice” (1999).

The first instance of quadruple drama supporting actress nominations occurred in 2019 when new contenders Gwendoline Christie and Sophie Turner were recognized alongside category veterans Lena Headey and Maisie Williams. All four ultimately came up short against Julia Garner on her first of three victories for “Ozark.”
The next case involved 2017 supporting champ Ann Dowd, 2018 guest winner Samira Wiley, and respective new and returning nominees Madeline Brewer and Yvonne Strahovski of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Although Garner was out of the running that year, they were still collectively bested by “The Crown” actress Gillian Anderson, whose show fully swept the major drama categories.
Just last year, “The White Lotus” made history as the first continuing series to produce five female supporting nominees in a single year. Immediately after prevailing over four of her costars from said program when it was classified as a limited series, Jennifer Coolidge defeated Meghann Fahy, Sabrina Impacciatore, Aubrey Plaza, and Simona Tabasco here.
Outside of this category, there have only been seven instances of comedy or drama series simultaneously amassing four or more bids for one supporting award. Before “The White Lotus” and “Succession” dominated the 2023 drama supporting actor lineup, the list included male quartets from “The West Wing” (2002), “Modern Family” (2011-2012), and “Ted Lasso” (2021) as well as a trailblazing quintet from “Hill Street Blues” (1982).
“The Morning Show” is also one of only 12 recipients of at least three concurrent drama supporting actress nominations. Those that garnered exactly three apiece are “Hill Street Blues” (1984), “L.A. Law” (1989), “NYPD Blue” (1994), “ER” (1997), “The Practice” (1999), “The West Wing” (2002), “Grey’s Anatomy” (2007), “Game of Thrones” (2016), “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2018), and “The Crown” (2021).
