What is The End of Evangelion about?
The End of Evangelion is written by Hideaki Anno — the creator of the Neon Genesis Evangelion series — and directed by Anno and Kazuya Tsurumaki. The film acts as an ending to the TV series Neon Genesis Evangelion, remaking the final two episodes which, at the time, were seen as controversial for their abstract direction. The film was a smash hit upon its release, and is often cited as one of the greatest animated films ever made.
“SEELE plans an attack on NERV after failing to create a man-made Third Impact,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “After reaffirming both her own and her mother’s existence in a state of despair, Asuka returns and begins the counterattack. However, new enemies descend from the heavens. Meanwhile, Shinji witnesses the horrifying wreckage of Asuka’s EVA-02 while piloting EVA-01. Mass production models surround EVA-01 and perform a solemn ceremony. What does it mean to complete a human heart?”
