‘Euphoria’ Season 3 hits production delay, creators have options

HBO and Sam Levinson will presumably give us a third season of “Euphoria” … eventually.

A production delay will allow its extremely in-demand cast—including Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Hunter Schafer, and Jacob Elordi—to continue to work elsewhere and also free the writers to put high school behind them, bringing these characters a bit further into the real world.

The Hollywood Reporter suggested that factoring in a time jump was more than a smart creative move, it would keep the very visible cast in the show’s good graces, since they can now, in HBO’s words “pursue other opportunities” and still “remain committed to making an exceptional third season.” No specific dates for the commencement of principal photography have been given, let alone an air date.

“Euphoria,” an adaptation of an Israeli drama of the same name, debuted in 2019 with eight episodes, then came back for a second season in 2022 with another eight. Two specials were released, one in 2019 and the other in 2020.

Zendaya has won two Best Drama Actress Emmys for her role of Rue, a teenager struggling with drug dependency and being at the center of all kinds of mishegoss. Sydney Sweeney has also been nominated as a Supporting Actress and the show itself was nominated for Best Drama Series. Colman Domingo won an Emmy for Best Drama Guest Actor, and it has also won Emmys for cinematography, original music, and other crafts categories.

Perhaps of more importance to its target demographic, however, is the show’s cultural dominance as a generator of conversation and memes.

Since the release of “Euphoria”’s second season, HBO and Levinson rolled the dice on a pop music-set series, “The Idol,” which was not particularly well received by critics or audiences. (Undoubtedly it will be rescued as an unheralded classic in time.) THR reports that Levinson, the 39-year-old son of “Rain Man” director Barry Levinson, is known in the industry as being “a notoriously deliberative writer,” so it could be a while until the next season is ready to go. HBO currently has the third season set to debut in 2025.
