Like the steamy 2005 spy thriller of the same name, Mr. & Mrs. Smith became a sensation when the series premiered on Amazon Prime in February. After a hiccup with the initial casting–which included Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a lead—Donald Glover and Maya Erskine took on the roles of John and Jane Smith, with Glover acting as the co-creator and executive producer alongside showrunner and co-creator Francesca Sloane.
In season one, the duo play a married assassin couple recruited by intelligence agency Hihi, which ultimately pairs the two together and relocates them to a brownstone in New York City. There, they work together as a team, and we learn there are more spies out there who, like them, are carrying out high-risk missions across the globe.
The first season ended with an explosive cliffhanger, leaving fans eager to hear about season two, including whether Glover and Erskine will return and what the plot could look like moving forward. Here’s everything we know so far.
Will there be a second season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith?
Amazon officially renewed Mr. & Mrs. Smith for a second season in May 2024, three months after the first season aired.
“We are excited to announce that a second season of our groundbreaking spy series, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, is in the works for our global Prime Video customers,” Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon MGM Studios, said in a press statement at the time. “The success of the first season, with its incredibly modern, hot reinvention of the original film, is a testament to the brilliant creators Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. We are proud to bring you another season filled with unforgettable journeys and new adventures.”
When will season two be released?
Amazon has not set a release date for season two, and it’s unknown whether the series has started filming. In May, Sloane revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the team “didn’t even get to start writing [season two] yet,” so it may be a while before the show returns.
When the first season premiered, all eight episodes dropped on the same day. If the co-creators are following the same timeline, that means season two could potentially debut in February 2025.
Who will be in the season two cast?
When the series was renewed in May, sources told Variety that Glover and Erskine were not expected to return as the stars of season two. (Spoiler alert: if you’ve seen the finale, you may know why.) Still, Glover and Sloane have both spoken out against this.
“Who says we’re not in it? Maybe we are. Maybe we aren’t,” Glover teased during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Similarly, Slone addressed the casting rumors in her interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I was just talking to Donald last night about this and we were laughing, because one of the pieces of press said, ‘according to our sources,’ and we’re like, ‘Who are these sources?'” she said. “We wrote a cliffhanger, we thought about it long and hard. It was one of the first things that we wrote. Why in the world—we haven’t said anything—but why in the world would we ruin a cliffhanger based on a headline? Maya and Donald may be dead; they may not be dead.”
What will happen in Mr. & Mrs. Smith season two?
Details about the next season are practically non-existent, but we can count on season two to center around the Smiths—whether or not that’s Glover and Erskine. More thrilling missions will likely take the spies around the globe, but until the new season, we’ll have to wait and see where they go.
