Everything to know about 'Dickinson' starring Hailee Steinfeld on Apple TV+
Reimagine the 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson as a millennial hero and you’ve got Apple TV+’s Dickinson.
The coming-of-age dramedy is one of the nine original series debuting with the launch of Apple TV+ on Nov. 1. Apple’s new streaming service will compete with the likes of Netflix, Amazon and Hulu and will continue to roll out new offerings every month.

When does Dickinson premiere?
On Nov. 1, the day that the Apple TV+ streaming service launches. The subscription costs $4.99 a month, though customers who purchase a new Apple device can get a free year.
What’s Dickinson about?
Apple’s official synopsis says the is “a half-hour comedy series starring Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld. Created by Alena Smith, Dickinson audaciously explores the constraints of society, gender, and family from the perspective of rebellious young poet Emily Dickinson.”
While the show is set in the 19th century, it displays very modern sensibilities. Steinfeld’s Dickinson is creative, feisty, outspoken and decidedly queer. The story follows her journey to tap into her imagination, despite living a quiet existence in 1850s society.
Who is in it?
Toby Huss (Halt and Catch Fire) and Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) star as Emily’s parents, Edward Dickinson and Mrs. Dickinson. Adrian Enscoe and Anna Baryshnikov are her siblings, Austin and Lavinia.
The guest cast includes comedian John Mulaney as poet and essayist Henry David Thoreau and singer Wiz Khalifa as Death.
What else is there to know?
At a Tribeca Film Festival screening of Dickinson, Steinfeld explained the show’s tonal balancing act. It “has these incredible comedic moments and this sort of dark humor and dramatic moments and everything in between,” she said. “It truly reflects everything that's in her poetry, which is every possible emotion there is to feel.”
Steinfeld was also inspired by the poet to record a new song, “Afterlife,” which played in the first trailer. Her music, as well as other contemporary songs, will be featured in Dickinson, helping to establish a modern feel.
