Ex-Knicks Guard Mike Bibby Recalls the Time He Discovered a Teammate Was Allegedly Stealing His Money
Former NBA player Mike Bibby once again recalled the time he discovered a teammate had been allegedly stealing his money, this time he did so in a recent conversation with Knicks Fan TV.
When asked about the situation he had briefly explained previously, Bibby broke down the full story of how he realized that $4200 was missing from his room. Bibby claimed he'd been robbed about “three or four times” during his 2011-2012 stint with the New York Knicks where he played as point guard off the bench for just one season.
“It wasn’t the first time; it was the first time he got caught,” Bibby began. He explained that there was a teammate—whose name he still won’t reveal—whom he would occasionally eat with. When that teammate called to ask if Bibby was going to get some food instead of returning to the hotel room where the team was staying, Bibby noted that his alarm bells weren’t going off yet—probably when they should have been.
When Bibby got back to his room, he realized that his money was gone. “Damn, somebody came into my room and stole my money,” said Bibby, reflecting on the experience. “I thought it was one of the maids because they were some of the only people that could get in the rooms.”
Determined to find his money, he informed the team that someone has stolen it. This prompted an investigation by hotel security which he said found footage of a player on the team retrieving a key to Bibby’s room. When Bibby and security went to search the room, he said they found the remnants of the envelope where he had kept the money.
A short while later, Bibby explained that the mystery player tried to act clueless about what happened. “He’s stressing because he knows he’s about to get caught,” claimed Bibby. “He tries to make up a lie and say that someone went in his room and stole his earring so he needs to check on that too.”
Though everything ultimately turned out fine, Bibby speculated about what would have happened if he caught his thieving teammate in the act. “If I would have came back and caught him in my room, it would have been rough for him,” he explained.
Bibby remained adamant about not revealing the teammate who allegedly stole the money from him. However, he did help narrow down the list, and when former Knicks forward Bill Walker's name was mentioned, he denied it was him and instead referred to him as a "buddy."
Bibby previously recounted this story on The OGs, a podcast hosted by Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller, back in July. You can peep the full interview here.
Earlier this year, Mike Bibby showcased a portion of his massive sneaker collection at the Gila River Resorts & Casinos in Phoenix. One of Team Jordan’s earliest members, he’s been collecting shoes since joining the league in 1998.
“No one has a video of my closet,” said Bibby at the time about the experience. “But I'll let a few people go in there and see it and stuff like that, but I think—I guess—this is going to be a new thing and bringing some shoes to the casino to show them off so people get to see stuff in person.”
