In an exclusive “9-1-1” preview, Jennifer Love Hewitt's Maddie faces her past trauma during triggering emergency
"Is your husband armed?" the star's dispatcher character asks in a sneak peek at season 7, episode 7, "Ghost of a Second Chance."
She may be a happy newlywed after last week's episode, but 9-1-1's Maddie will be faced with her traumatic previous marriage on this week's episode of the ABC drama.
Jennifer Love Hewitt's Maddie has spent years moving on after her violent first husband stalked and kidnapped her, but all that trauma comes flooding back during an intense 9-1-1 call that opens season 7, episode 7 — and Entertainment Weekly has an exclusive preview of the scene.
The call starts with a woman asking "Hi there, is this the Sunset Regency Hotel?" At first Maddie believes the caller dialed 9-1-1 by mistake, but quickly realizes the woman is in danger. Using coded language, Maddie attempts to get the information necessary to help — with her fellow dispatcher Josh (Bryan Safi) offering to take over the call once he realizes it might be triggering to her. The clip ends with Maddie realizing there is also a baby in the car.
Maddie's first husband, Doug (Hewitt's real-life husband, Brian Hallisay), clearly continues to haunt the dispatcher — though it was her new husband, Chimney (Kenneth Choi), who was literally haunted by her ex in last week's trippy episode that saw Chim delirious after contracting viral encephalitis.

"It's wonderful whenever they bring him back," Choi told EW after episode 6. "First, Brian is a wonderful guy and he's a terrific actor. I love filming scenes with him. It's never light and flowers and roses and balloons and stuffed animals when Doug shows up. So there's a physical conflict with the viral encephalitis, but this sort of mental-emotional rollercoaster he's on, constantly seeing this figment of his imagination manifested in this character who stabbed him, who used to beat the crap out of this woman he loves and is going to marry."
Whatever happens after episode 7's 9-1-1 call, Hewitt has promised that the 10-episode season will end May 30 with Chimney and Maddie happy at home.

"Just yesterday, I was talking to someone on the set and I was like, 'This is the first time ever that Maddie and Chimney have no unfinished business. We're just kind of in a good spot. She's happy at work. She's happy as the mom. We finally got married, and we're just kind of in a good place,'" Hewitt said last week. "I think it's just some good stability and goodness for a while. And that's kind of nice to say, because we've been through so much. I mean, I do love all the crazy stuff that we're put through — so I hope that we have some crazy stuff again. But I think for the future, and through the end of the season, it's just good. It's joy. As for season 8? Well, we'll see."
9-1-1 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
