Dirtybird’s youngest denizen has a lot to be happy about.

As one of his San Francisco label’s rising stars, Jay already has three solo EPs and a slew of bookings at events like HARD Summer and Holy Ship! under his belt. His fourth EP, Momentum, will be released on fellow dirtybird signees Catz n Dogz’s own Pets Recordings imprint next week. The release features three tracks, including a collaborative title track with Kill Frenzy, and Jay feels its upbeat closer reflects his current contentment.

“As I’m finishing up an incredible last year of college, and getting to do all of these amazing things in music, it’s felt good making happy, lighthearted songs that really capture my mood these days,” he says. “‘You Give Me Butterflies’ is a carefree day at the beach, spent with your friends, acting like 8-year-olds.”

Despite his new track’s playful nature, Jay says fans of the darker side he displayed on his recent Disciples remix need not fear.
“I’ve spent a large part of the last year exploring darker sounds and textures,” he says. “I definitely want to continue experimenting in that direction, but I wouldn’t want to neglect my goofy, cheerful side either.”
Justin Jay’s Momentum EP will be available through Pets Recordings on March 16.
