Emmy Experts slugfest: How did ‘Hacks’ pull off that shocking win?

So, uh, how did “Hacks” beat “The Bear”? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to break down that shocking Emmy upset and all the winners and losers from Sunday’s 76th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Despite breaking its own record for most wins by a comedy series in one year with 11, “The Bear” failed to grab the big one. The reigning Best Comedy Series champ was taken down by “Hacks,” which “only” won two other awards this year, Best Comedy Actress for Jean Smart — her third — and Best Comedy Writing. Signs also pointed to another series win for “The Bear” after Liza Colón-Zayas beat Hannah Einbinder in Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Did the discourse over whether or not “The Bear” is a comedy finally do it in? Was it the mixed reception to its third season that’s not even eligible until next year?

In drama, “Shōgun” grabbed four awards, including Best Drama Series, from the six categories in which it was nominated and extended its own record for most wins by a program in a single year to 18 after having set the record at the Creative Arts ceremony last week. Just like at Creative Arts, it lost two categories, this time supporting actor to Billy Crudup for “The Morning Show” and writing to “Slow Horses.” Why was it unable to go six for six?
