How will “The Bear” fare at the winter awards after its surprising Emmy loss? Which new shows will break through? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are with here with their first Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards TV predictions.

Even before “Hacks” upset “The Bear” for the Best Comedy Series Emmy last month, it already felt like the “The Bear” would be vulnerable to losses at the winter awards after the less-than-ideal response to its third season. The FX series will definitely still get nominations, but will it go home empty-handed everywhere? “Hacks” is the odds-on favorite to take home its second series Globe but remains in second in the comedy ensemble odds at the SAG Awards. But maybe this is finally “Only Murders in the Building’s” chance to win a major prize?

The old Globes also loved to reward a brand spankin’ new show, but the jury’s still out on whether the reformed Globes operates the same way. Among the new shows in contention: FX’s “English Teacher,” Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” and “Nobody Wants This,” HBO’s “The Penguin” and “The Franchise,” and Apple TV+’s “Presumed Innocent,” “Bad Monkey,” and “Disclaimer.” And these are just the ones that have already premiered in the second half of 2024.

Elsewhere, we discuss whether Kathy Bates‘ “Matlock” will be repping broadcast dramas and if “Shōgun” will pull a “Succession” at SAG.
