Experts slugfest: Our first 2025 Golden Globe Awards film predictions

Does “Anora” or “Emilia Pérez” have the edge in the Golden Globes’ comedy/musical categories? Will Nicole Kidman win her seventh Globe? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their first Golden Globe film predictions.

“Anora” and “Emilia Pérez” are not only top two in the Best Picture Oscar odds but are top two in the Best Comedy/Musical Film Golden Globe odds as well. The former definitely puts the “comedy” in the category title, while the latter for sure puts the “musical” in it. Which has the edge? Similarly, the past two Best Actress Oscar races have featured a frontrunner in drama and one in comedy/musical. Not the case this year, at least at the moment, since “Anora” star Mikey Madison and “Emilia Pérez’s” Karla Sofía Gascón will vie for the same Globe — and the winner could very well establish herself as the Oscar favorite.

The Best Drama Actress race could come down to a battle of past Globe faves: six-time champ Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”), whose win for 2021’s “Being the Ricardos” was not televised, and three-time champ Angelina Jolie (“Maria”), whose last win was 25 years ago for “Girl, Interrupted.” Between the Globes’ split genres and the expansion last year from five to six slots per category, there’s also room for fringe contenders, like “The Substance’s” Demi Moore to make it in.
