Experts slugfest: Our pre-festivals 2025 Oscar predictions

The festival season is upon us, so Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with some fresh Oscar predictions before a bevy of these contenders are seen.

Since our last update in July, “A Complete Unknown” has entered the chat. James Mangold‘s Bob Dylan biopic, with Timothee Chalamet playing the icon, filmed in the spring and will open on Christmas (a Clint Eastwood-esque turnaround here). It also stars Elle Fanning as Dylan’s love interest based on Suze Rotolo and Edward Norton as Pete Seeger. The film has already cracked the top 10 in the Best Picture odds, while Chalamet has jumped into fourth place in the Best Actor odds. Could Chalamet become the youngest Best Actor winner ever?

Meanwhile, Saoirse Ronan‘s “The Outrun” was acquired by Sony Pictures Classics for an October release and the four-time nominee has risen to eighth place in the Best Actress odds. She’s also in fourth place for her other film, Apple’s “Blitz,” but it’s possible she goes supporting for that.

Elsewhere, we discuss “Sing Sing’s” frontrunner status, Netflix’s lack of an obvious frontrunner like in years past and more.
