Experts slugfest: Our ridiculously early 2025 Emmy predictions
Are you still buzzing from “Hacks” huge upset win over “The Bear”? Well, keep that energy and bring it into next year. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are with their ridiculously early 2025 Emmy predictions.
In comedy, most of the current Best Comedy Series lineup will be eligible, including “Hacks,” which starts filming Season 4 next week, and “The Bear,” which will compete for its divisive third season. “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building” will also be eligible for their respective fourth seasons, while “What We Do in the Shadows” will try to go out with a bang for its sixth and final season. But after missing the 2023-24 cycle, can “Wednesday” crack the field again — and can “Shrinking” score a series nomination for first time? And what new comedies will make a splash?

While “Hacks” could defend its crown in comedy, there will definitely be a new Best Drama Series champ since “Shōgun” Season 2 still sounds like it’s in the “concepts of a plan” stage. “Slow Horses” is the only current nominee that will be eligible next year (just like how “The Crown” was this year), but unlike this year, the field will be stacked with returning faves and former nominees. “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus,” “Squid Game” and “Severance” will all be back — the last one returning a whopping three years after its first season. And after “The White Lotus” spammed the acting the categories with its first two seasons, how many Season 3 actors will make the cut?
Elsewhere, we discuss Ryan Murphy‘s expanding anthology franchises, if Jack Lowden and Saoirse Ronan can win his-and-hers Emmy and Oscar next year and more.
