Failure to launch: Samantha Bee's new app to increase voter turnout crashes in debut
Full Frontal With Samantha Bee launched a civic tech trivia game app — This Is Not a Game: The Game — Wednesday, with the host determined that it could help increase voter turnout in the midterm elections.
Bee partnered on the project with expert Adam Werbach, who described the discipline: “Civic tech is this idea that we can make the world a better place through the technology we have. It’s fun. You don’t know you’re doing democracy.”
Bee and Werbach fashioned the game, a trivia app with political and comedic undertones, after the popular HQ Trivia. To encourage people to play, there is a real cash prize for the winner(s), with the first prize pot being $5,000.
The first game was scheduled to start at 11 p.m. Wednesday, but heavy traffic caused the app to crash. As a result, the launch was pushed to Thursday.
The show’s official Twitter was philosophical about the snafu:
Good news! People LOVE our new game! Bad news! All those people playing at once crashed it! #ThisIsNotaGame pic.twitter.com/2CjbUmpd7r
