Daniel Bruhl’s return as Helmut Zemo in Marvel’s “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” upcoming Disney+ series, which will be more in line with the comics version of the character.
Bruhl posted an image on his Instagram account that showed his “Captain America: Civil War” villain wearing his famous purple mask, which he did not wear in the 2016 Russo Brothers-directed film. Bruhl’s return to the MCU was announced during Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con panel on Saturday.
In the comics — where he goes by the name Baron Zemo — Zemo is a major enemy of Captain America, always wearing a purple, sock-like mask. The MCU version looks to be more tactical in nature; in “Civil War” Zemo is an ex-special forces soldier from the fictional nation of Sokovia, seeking revenge on The Avengers over the destruction of his country in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Bruhl’s Zemo was imprisoned at the end of “Civil War” after he was apprehended by T’Challa/Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), though he was successful in creating a rift between Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.).
“Falcon and Winter Soldier” will launch in Fall 2020 as the first of the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows. Featuring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan in the title roles, it also features the return of Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter. “Falcon and The Winter Soldier” is one of five Marvel Studios-produced TV series for Disney+, the upcoming streaming service that debuts in November.
The other four are “WandaVision,” “Loki,” “Hawkeye” and the animated “What If…”
