Fans Attempt One Last Hail Mary to Save Their Beloved Show

Television can be a cut throat business. That’s never more clear than when a network or streaming service cans a beloved show, sometimes, it seems, before it can even take off. That’s what happened with supernatural detective series Dead Boy Detectives, which was recently canceled after just debuting its first (and now apparently, only) season on April 25.

Despite resonating with a passionate fan base thrilled with its humor, horror, diversity and heart, Netflix decided to pass on giving the show (based on a popular comic book series of the same name) another shot. And fans are not happy.
Series star Jayden Revri who played Charles, one of the titular dead boy detectives, took to Instagram to mourn the cancellation, writing, “I absolutely love this show and all of the amazing characters and the lessons they teach. None of them would’ve been brought to life if it wasn’t for my incredible co-stars, who taught me more than I could ever explain in writing, I am beyond grateful to you all.”
And George Rexstrew, who played ghostly bff Edwin, responded simply with, “My Charles forever.”
He, however, wasn’t the only one who commented, as Revri’s post was flooded with devastated fans wanting Netflix to give the show another chance. And that’s not all they’re doing to save the series.
As of right now, a fan-started Change.org petition is well on its way to hitting its 10,000 signature goal with the idea that, as Change.org put it in a statement, “Petition starters think executives making the decisions to axe their favorite shows are out of touch with the people watching them – and petitions are a way to demonstrate fan support.”
And it’s not a crazy idea. While many fan attempts to revive shows fail, they do, sometimes work. In fact, it once worked for another Netflix show, Sense8, when fan outcry convinced the streamer to bring it back for a special finale to tie up the story. Brooklyn Nine-Nine switched channels after Fox canceled it and fan outcry convinced the folks at NBC that it would be a good investment. And remember when Lucifer was canned by Fox? Fans started petitions and campaigns and Netflix swooped in to give it another season.

So while we can’t say that the fan outcry will be successful, it’s made the difference between cancellation and salvation before. For now, fans are just hoping that like their favorite ghostly sleuths, death won’t mean the end for Dead Boy Detectives.
