Fans Jump to Kelly Clarkson’s Defense as Singer Criticizes Former Appearance During Major Anniversary

Fans are showering Kelly Clarkson with praise after the singer made a gentle jab at herself over the weekend.

The "Breakway" performer was one of many celebrating the 20th anniversary of the sequel to Disney's The Princess Diaries, resharing a post on Instagram from the film's star, Anne Hathaway, which included a clip from the track's music video.

In it, Clarkson arrives on the red carpet for the premiere of The Princess Diaries 2, dressed in a gown with a chunky statement necklace and a pair of sunglasses, despite it being night.

"Wearing sunglasses at night on a red carpet…. I was that kind of cool ?????♀?," she captioned the post, making fun of herself with a facepalm emoji. However, followers jumped to her defense over the classic early aughts fashion, which many dubbed  "ICONIC" and "legendary! ??????."

"honestly the look was a serve," one fan declared, while another argued that "Everybody was that kind of cool back then! ????."

"But Kelly, we all had those sunglasses, babe. You were our idol. ??," someone else agreed, while another assured her, "You’re always cool!! I love you so much," and a third told her, "Own that!!"

"Love this song, video, and moment in time!" another celebrated.

Many also begged for more related content from the musician, with several asking for a reissue of the hit single, potentially inspired by her own suggestion for Taylor Swift to rerecord her early catalog, and one hoping that Clarkson might "do a song for the next Princess Diaries movie," which is reportedly in development.
