Fans love 'The Good Place' for ending in a way that most shows don't
After four seasons, NBC's The Good Place has come to an end.
During the series finale Thursday, our beloved characters each learned, in their own time, that they were ready to leave the Good Place as they either walked through the final door or, in Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and Michael's (Ted Danson) case, found a new role for themselves.
After Jason (Manny Jacinto) and Tahani each told their friends they were leaving, Eleanor (Kristen Bell) struggled as her boyfriend, Chidi (William Jackson Harper), told her it was time for him to go as well. In fact, Eleanor even tried to guilt-trip him into staying.
“Jason's gone, Tahani's off doing her thing and I'm not ready to go, so if you leave, then I'm alone here. I was alone my whole life, and I told myself I like it that way, but I don't. I like being with you,” Eleanor told Chidi.
However, in the end, since Eleanor has become a better person, she let him go.
Cheleanor fans' hearts were, of course, broken Thursday. Here were just a few of their reactions:

Even Danson chimed in:
Can humans literally ball their eyes out? Is this a new form of #TheBadPlace torture?

However, while viewers were emotional over The Good Place ending, on the other hand, they were also happy because they thought the series finale was "perfect."
I laughed and cried at the same time. It was perfect. Goodbye #TheGoodPlace pic.twitter.com/vX7zt7X8Jx

Fans also praised the fact that the series knew exactly “how and when to say goodbye,” and didn't drag on forever. Something many television shows succumb to.
#TheGoodPlace finale is a master class in TV.
The perfect ending to every story.
The perfect mix of laughter and tears.
The perfect commentary on life.
People are going to be rewatching, quoting and learning from this show forever.
It knew exactly how and when to say goodbye.— Alex Goldschmidt (@alexandergold) January 31, 2020
man this episode of #TheGoodPlace is so meta, just like Eleanor doesn’t want anyone to exit The Good Place, we humans don’t want the show to end. in the end the lesson is we may want an unlimited amount of a good thing but that’s not possible.

During the live after-show event with NBC host Seth Meyers, even Kristen Bell pointed out how beautiful and symbolic that was, when she stated, "There is this beautiful thing you can do, as a writer, that they did on the show, which is, like, the show ended too soon. You wanted, maybe we did, wanted more of it. But that's just what you get. That's the amount of time you get. It's a little too short. It's a lot like life."
The Good Place series finale aired Thursday, Jan. 30 at 8:30 p.m. on NBC.
