“What’s a movie you love but can't deny is incredibly stupid?,” was the question posed in a Reddit group for film buffs. The viral thread has exploded with reactions as people discuss their favorite ludicrous picks, including some classics. Let’s dive into the absurdities fans acknowledge but don’t let impede their love for their favorite flicks!

Viral Reddit post asks people to name films they love but are admittedly outlandish

While responses to the original post in the thread were overwhelming, some Reddit members raised the question of what exactly constitutes a valid answer amidst a sea of films that literally serve the purpose of being nonsensical: Zoolander, Dumb And Dumber, Talladega Nights. Here are a few fan offerings outside of the traditional over-the-top comedy.

‘A Quiet Place’ (2018-2024)

The thread was kicked off with the original poster using John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place series as their own example. The premise of the thriller being a dystopian society where absolute silence is the only means for survival amongst deadly creatures that hunt based on sound, the fan questioned: “no one ever farts, coughs or sneezes?”

“Anything becomes believable if you suspend disbelief enough,” one commenter responded, “And you have to suspend a lot of disbelief with A Quiet Place. I quite like the movie but (in my opinion) almost every single bit of world-building doesn't hold up under any scrutiny at all. It's easy enough to ignore it all because the tension and drama of the story is very engaging and so it can still be really fun to watch, regardless.”

‘Independence Day’ (1996)

Another sci-fi movie takes the list in this story following a group of people fighting for their freedom as aliens reigning terror over Fourth of July weekend.

“I put on Independence Day last summer, thinking I'd just watch 30-45 minutes,” said one commenter. “But then I got totally sucked in and watched the whole thing. It is so well paced, and I still love it the same as when I was 13 in the theater.”

Independence Day is a perfect example of a nonsensical, pure fun, well-placed summer blockbuster,” said another. “None of it is realistic. The plot is idiotic (linking an Earthly computer virus up to the mothership? (Come the f*** on) Still a blast.”

‘Speed’ (1994)

Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock team up to save passengers on a bomb-containing bus by keeping it from dropping below 50 miles per hour in this fan favorite, but one user critiqued that the main idea was better than the story built around it.

“It's my comfort movie, but yes, very dumb,” another user agreed.

‘Field of Dreams’ (1989)

An A-list cast including Kevin Costner, Ray Liotta and James Earl Jones lead this sports drama, but that didn’t stop one fan from finding its flaws.

“A man puts his family financially underwater, and tries to hold someone hostage by pretending his finger is a gun, because he starts hearing voices and sees ghosts of long dead baseball players?,” one critic wrote. “I can see why the theories, like gas poisoning or that he's otherwise incapacitated is so compelling to some! And why my sister thinks it's a generally stupid movie. But hey... it's for the love of the game.”

‘Jurassic World’ (2015-2022)

One commenter was entertained, but less than impressed by all three movies in the dinosaur domination franchise starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.

“I know they're not loved by all, but they're so bad, they're good,” they wrote.

“I wouldn't say they’re all ‘so bad’ as much as poorly written and sometimes the acting wasn’t great,” said one rebuttal. “The action scenes (for the most part) are very thrilling and well shot. So, I won‘t fight anyone who calls them bad movies and we all have our opinions, but I don’t think they’re necessarily completely poorly made movies. I just think we just have higher expectations for these movies.”
