Fans Say Robin Roberts’ ‘Brave’ On-Air Stunt Is ‘Excellent Television’
Robin Roberts set a record and proved she's a "real champ" with an on-air stunt that tested her heat limits and saw her indulge in a series of seriously spicy wings and hot sauces, all before 9 a.m. local time.
The Good Morning America co-anchor sat down with YouTuber Sean Evans–known for co-creating and hosting the popular series Hot Ones–and her chat was not much different than the countless other interviews Evans has conducted with celebrities as they take on the challenge of eating hot wings coated in sauces that get progressively spicier as the two converse.
"You're setting a record today," Evans said in a clip documenting the three-wing mini version of his hit program that he set up for Roberts on Thursday, Sept. 5, noting that he was honored it was a "dream" of the TV personality's to compete on the First We Feast series.
"I hope it does not turn into a nightmare as we do this very steep ramp-up," Evans joked of the live broadcast. "And here we are without a safety net, the first time for that."
The two got right into it, beginning with the Classic wing and a question about some of the first jobs Robert had before her broadcasting career took off. They then moved on to the Los Calientes Barbacoa wings, accompanied by advice she had for people who "think they could never be morning people."
She took a couple swigs of milk and come time for the third and final wing, Roberts was teary-eyed and blushing, but in good spirits. Seemingly hesitant to try the Last Dab, the 63-year-old news anchor rose to the occasion–even adding an extra drop of the sauce made with "Pepper X," said to be the "hottest pepper in the world," to the top of her bite.
With her lip quivering, she waived her napkin in the air as a sign of defeat and looked across the table at Evans. "Wow," she said, wiping a tear from her eye. "Woah."
Her resilience didn't go unnoticed as fans praised her "Emmy worthy ??????" performance.
"STRONG ????," exclaimed fellow ABC's chief meteorologist, Ginger Zee.
"This was awesome!" one top-liked comment cheered. "Go Robin! ????."
Someone else suggested that she was "Brave ????" for even partaking in the challenge.
"This was excellent television," another admitted.
A fifth joked that "The heat was no match for @robinrobertsgma ???????."
"Has there been a more adorable hot ones guest experience," a different fan asked. "What a legend!"
Meanwhile, the official Instagram account for Hulu called her a "real champ! ???."
