Fans upset after Jay Weinberg fired from Slipknot, but dad Max is '100% proud' of him

Slipknot fans are upset, but dad Max Weinberg is proud after son Jay Weinberg, drummer for Slipknot for 10 years, was fired by the band.

In a Nov. 5 post on the group's website, Slipknot announced Jay was departing due to a “creative decision” as the band was “evolving.” The post has since been deleted.

“Been a fan for 23 years and I think I'm done with Slipknot,” commented a fan on Slipknot's Facebook page. “Jay's firing for ''creative decision' to 'evolve' was the last straw for me.”

Jay took over for original drummer Joey Jordison, who was similarly let go. Jordison died in 2021 at the age of 46.

“I was heartbroken and blindsided to receive the phone call that I did on the morning of November 5th; the news of which, most of you learned shortly after,” said Jay on a Nov. 12 social media post. “However, I’ve been overwhelmed by — and truly grateful for — the outpouring of love and support I’ve received from this incredible community I consider to be my creative and artistic home.”

Dad Max commented with a note of support.

“For 33 years you’ve made your mom and I 100% proud,” Max said. “This moment is no exception. You’re a class act! Love Dad.”

A request for comment from Slipknot was not replied to as of press time.

More members of the music community expressed their support for Jay.

“I have so much admiration and respect for you, Jay,” said Tre Cool, drummer for Green Day. “You are still yet to make the best music of your life.”

“Love to you darlin’ you are a legend and great things are still on the horizon for u!” said Lzzy Hale of Halestorm.

Jay Weinberg, who grew up at the Bayshore, famously subbed for his dad on the E Street Band’s “Working on a Dream” tour in 2009 when he was 18. After that, he drummed for Madball and Against Me! before landing the Slipknot gig.

Jay’s drumming has been lauded with multiple metal drumming awards over the last decade.

“I don’t know how, and I don’t know when, but I look forward to creating loud, passionate and heartfelt music that we enjoy together again,” said Jay in his post. “Until then, please know it’s been the joy of a lifetime to spend the last 10 years with you, sharing in our love for this special corner of the music and art world.

“This isn’t the end, and I’m thrilled to discover what the future has in store for us.

“Thank you.”

Jay drummed on three Slipknot albums during his tenure: “The Gray Chapter” (2014); “We Are Not Your Kind” (2019); and “The End, So Far” (2022). Slipknot was formed 1995 in Des Moines, Iowa. Band members wear garish masks on stage, as did Jay behind the drums. He debuted a new mask over the summer.

Max Weinberg's Jukebox will headline the upcoming Light of Day Bob's Birthday Bash on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank.
