‘Fargo’ Sets Premiere: Our Nowdonchaknow Guide to Season 3

“Oh, yah!” We need to talk about is Season 3 of Fargo, because it just got a premiere date: April 19th on FX. That’s less than two months away, but don’t fret, because we’ll get you all caught up with this: SuperFan TV’s Nowdonchaknow Guide to Fargo Season 3…

THE SETTING

Let’s begin with the 1996 movie: Fargo, written and directed by the Coen Brothers, began in the winter of 1987 and followed the foolhardy scheming of Jerry Lundegaard to hold his own wife for a ransom from his rich father-in-law. Everything goes to hell in a parking lot exchange, and the money gets buried on the side of the road.

In 2014, Fargo returned as a TV series that seemed loosely connected to the original movie, telling a similar tale of a crime gone wrong, until in a flashback we see where the Supermarket King of Minnesota came upon his riches… a briefcase on the side of the road. The 2006-set story also follows the cops investigating the crime, including the long in the tooth State Trooper, Lou Solverson.

Season Two of Fargo jumped back to 1979 when Solverson investigated the disappearance of a crime boss’s son that sparked a war between crime families. There were also aliens.

Now, Season Three will again jump in time to 2010 and follow the story of the Parking Lot King of Minnesota — apparently, the Land of 10,000 Lakes has a lot of royalty — and his less successful brother, Ray.

THE CAST

Ewan McGregor will play both the Parking Lot King Emmit Stussy and his slightly younger, balding and pot-bellied parole office brother, Ray. Carrie Coon plays the police chief, Jim Gaffigan, her deputy, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is Ray Stussy’s girlfriend, Nikki Swango. As the synopsis puts it, Swango is “a crafty and alluring recent parolee with a passion for competitive bridge.” Michael Stuhlbarg, Scoot McNairy, Karan Soni, and Thomas Mann round out the cast.

THE CONNECTIONS

Creator Noah Hawley has already said, “There are going to be connections, the way the first year was connected to the movie and the second year was connected to the first,” but has left it at that. Considering the original movie featured a climactic scene in a parking lot, perhaps that will play into it. Maybe Emmit Stussy made his riches off insurance money from the crime. Or perhaps one of the Ewan McGregor characters will be really into woodchippers.

Fargo Season 3 will premiere Wednesday, April 19 at 10 p.m. on FX.
