The Farr Side: Who is Dylan Scott?

Who is Dylan Scott? That might sound a little funny coming from someone who loves all kinds of music and writes about it often... But, the truth is – even someone like me is learning of new or newer artists all the time.

The best way for me to explain is by asking you who is Morgan Wallen? Or, who is this Blake Shelton guy? Tim McGraw?

All artists are new at some point. Or, are new to listeners who have come across a song or two and became a fan now. I might be that person when it comes to Dylan Scott. This is a country singer who is well into his second decade as an artist and a touring performer. He’s already been an established hit-maker on country radio.

Dylan Scott is currently on the road this summer performing at venues across the country. The country star will be at Blue Gate’s Performing Arts Center in Shipshewana, Indiana Saturday night, June 15. Tickets for the show are available at www.bluegatetheater.com.

Scott grew up in Louisiana, but like most aspiring country music hopefuls, he relocated to Nashville to pursue his dreams. It didn’t take long for his dreams to materialize. His debut single, “Makin’ This Boy Crazy,” dropped in June 2013.

“Makin’ This Boy Go Crazy” wasn’t a breakthrough hit right out of the gates, but it did put him on the country music map so to speak. The song peaked at No. 54 and charted for a mere 10 weeks.

His second single, “Mmm, Mmm, Mmm,” came a year later and faired a little better landing at No. 50. “Lay It On Me” followed with similar success. Both songs peaked the interest of country music journalists who gave him vocal comparisons to Jake Owen and Colt Ford. His smooth baritone and fun rap style singled him out from some of his contemporaries.

Hoping for some major success, the singer honed in on his songwriting capabilities and captured feelings and moments personal to him. That was the magic he needed to strike gold, or platinum I should say. “My Girl” was written about his high school sweetheart, Blair, who later became his wife.

“My Girl” became a big hit for Scott. The song hit No. 1 in the summer of 2016 and quickly achieved platinum status with sales in excess of 1,000,000 copies. If you aren’t sure what that means think of singers like Wallen and Taylor Swift. It’s a big deal.

Scott followed up the success of “My Girl” with the track “Hooked.” The song was another smash and peaked at No. 2 on the country singles chart. The album, “Dylan Scott,” was equally popular debuting at No. 5 on the country album charts.

More hits and singles came including “Crazy Over Me,” “Nothing To Do Town” and “Nobody.”

It appeared that the singer was well on his way. He was earning recognition for his craft with nominations for some prestigious honors like Best New Country Artist from iHeartRadio Music Awards, as well as, Country Radio Seminar’s New Faces Of Country.

“Nobody” earned Scott a 2021 CMT Award for Breakthrough Video of the Year. He was also nominated for New Male Artist of the Year by the Academy of Country Music. I find this interesting considering he was on the scene for nearly a decade by this point. That goes to show just how difficult it is to “make it” in the music business.

His latest album, “Livin’ My Best Life,” couldn’t have been titled any better for the singer. The lead single, “Truck,” topped the country singles chart as did the second single, “Can’t Have Mine (Find You A Girl).”

I’m intrigued by his journey and a fan of his songwriting talents. His slow rise to fame has kept him grounded and his music real. That’s something to be said in an industry filled with egos bigger than their cowboy hats.
