First 'Idol baby' stuns judges with a pitch-perfect voice on 'American Idol'
On Monday night’s episode of American Idol, the show found its first “Idol baby.”
To audition for this season of Idol, contestants needed to be born by June 11, 2002 — the day the series premiered. Victoria McQueen was born on that day and at just 15, is the youngest person in the competition.
Host Ryan Seacrest accompanied McQueen into the audition room to introduce judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan to their special contestant. “Victoria was born on the day that this show was born on television back in 2002,” Seacrest told them. “Wow! All the stars are kind of aligning,” Perry exclaimed. “It must mean something.” The stars may have been aligning, but the judges still needed to see if the Idol baby had an Idol voice.
McQueen sang an a cappella version of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ’bout a Thing,” and the judges were completely blown away. “Spot on the money,” Richie told McQueen. “I know the song so well, but for you to do it a cappella and perfect notes — I’m just telling you.” Perry described McQueen’s voice as “kind of perfect pitch,” and Richie agreed with her, concluding, “You couldn’t get it any better.”
“You light up a room when you walk in — I hope you know that,” Perry told McQueen. “We see many people every single day, and this is different. Honestly, there’s something written in the stars for you.” In the end, all three judges fell in love with their Idol baby and rewarded her with a golden ticket to Hollywood.
