5 Directors Who Should Be Considered for the 'Deadpool' Sequel

When news came that Deadpool director Tim Miller would not be directing the sequel due to creative differences with its star, Ryan Reynolds, a petition shortly followed imploring Quentin Tarantino to take charge.

Tarantino is a talented director, and as he told Yahoo Movies, he has already thought about making a superhero movie featuring Luke Cage. Yet, we’re not sure if he’s the right fit when you take into account that the movie already has a strong creative team with Reynolds and returning screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Instead, we think these five directors should be considered for Deadpool 2.

Michelle MacLaren

Before Patty Jenkins took over, MacLaren was set to direct Wonder Woman, so we know she’s amenable to comic book fare. The Canadian-born director has already proven herself by directing some of the most notable episodes of Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Breaking Bad.

Matthew Vaughn

Vaughn is no stranger to the Marvel universe of which Deadpool is a member, since he directed possibly the best X-Men film, First Class. He’s also shown his penchant for humor and ultraviolence with Kick-Ass and Kingsman. Vaughn is probably the safest choice on this list.

Stephen Chow

You might remember Chow best for his star turn in the delightful 2004 action comedy Kung Fu Hustle, which he also directed. Chow, born in Hong Kong, is best known in China, where he recently helmed The Mermaid, the highest-grossing film in Chinese history. He almost directed the Seth Rogen flop, The Green Hornet, maybe now’s the time for him to make his American directorial debut.

Karyn Kusama

We know that ?on Flux wasn’t the best movie, but blaming Kusama is unfair. She endured three different administration changes at Paramount and had the final cut taken away from her. After an edit rendered her film impossible to enjoy, she nearly took her name off the movie. Despite that, ?on Flux is visually captivating, and Girlfight and The Invitation were both entertaining. Kusama deserves a better blockbuster.

Edgar Wright

Edgar Wright would be our choice if we could make a call. His Cornetto Trilogy, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, gave us some of the most visually dazzling action comedies of all time. He almost made Ant-Man, and maybe 20th Century Fox’s approach to Marvel comics would be more suitable. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the comic movie Wright did make, actually employed Deadpool director Tim Miller for its visual effects, so one would think Wright’s style would be a natural fit for the sequel.
