Fodor’s travel guide names Knoxville a perfect family destination spot. Here’s why

Tell everyone you know not to overlook Knoxville when planning their next getaway. Travel and tourism site Fodor’s has named the East Tennessee city a perfect destination for the whole family.

“No one can resist the charms of Knoxville, Tennessee,” Eva Morreale writes for Fodor’s, adding that it “should be on your radar” when planning family trips.

Morreale recently traveled with her parents, 10-year-old brother and future in-laws, specifically choosing Knoxville as the place to accommodate her multigenerational companions. It has the “historic charms of Richmond, the warmth and quirk of Nashville, and the peacefulness of Savannah.” And, oh yes, it’s really close to the “the legendary Dollywood.”

Here are more reasons why she says Knoxville is perfect for a family vacation.

A city to please everyone

The travel writer found unique things for her family to enjoy while in Knoxville, including honky-tonks, three stops on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail and the Sunsphere. Sequoyah Park, World’s Fair Park, and the riverwalk on Volunteer Landing were also mentioned as fun outdoor adventures.

Places to eat and drink

Knoxville has some good food; even visitors say so. Morreale praised popular Knoxville-only restaurants, including Petro’s Chili and Chips, Potchke and Cruze Farm, and more upscale options such as Oliver Royale and The Brass Pearl.

The family-friendly bowling alley Maple Hall also got a shoutout, but for the adults in the group, cocktail-focused distillery PostModern Spirits “reigns supreme,” Morreale wrote.

Fairy tales and Dolly!

Morreale initially added Ancient Lore Village on the itinerary for her 10-year-old brother, but the entire family ended up having fun at the secluded, themed resort that looks like a fantasy novel come to life. The played outdoor games and puzzles, and even took a few lessons in archery and axe-throwing.

Country icon Dolly Parton is beyond beloved in these parts. Though the essence of Dolly is woven throughout the city, Morreale’s family drove to Pigeon Forge to ride the rollercoasters and pig out on big pulled pork sandwiches at Dollywood.

“It’s completely worth the hype,” she wrote. Dollywood is stacked with Great Smokey Mountain revelry and flair and is a perfect pit stop while visiting.”
