Former Trump aide says he witnessed Kellyanne Conway leaking information to the media
Former White House aide Cliff Sims appeared on The View on Monday to discuss his new book, Team of Vipers: My 500 Extraordinary Days in the Trump White House. In it he wrote about his time in the Trump administration, working with figures like White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, whom he referred to as a “cartoon villain brought to life.”
During his interview on the show, Sims opened up about once being called to Conway’s office to write a statement responding to accusations that Conway was leaking things about President Trump to the media when she was not being interviewed for television.
“I’m sitting on her laptop writing this statement and her iMessages are synced so I can see, as she sits at her desk texting, I can see what she’s saying,” Sims said. “And she’s doing exactly what I’m supposed to be writing a statement defending her about.”
When pressed, he confirmed that she was leaking information “as I’m typing.” But Sims did have some positive things to say about Conway and how she handles her role in the Trump White House.
“One thing that will never go out of style in Trump world is someone with thick skin, who’s tough, who’s willing to go on TV and defend the president,” Sims said. “I give Kellyanne all the props in the world for being that tough and being able to go in and take people on the way that she does.”
The accusation Sims leveled at Conway as a leaker in the Trump administration was interesting to the hosts of The View as they noted that her husband, George T. Conway, is a consistent critic of Trump. Joy Behar asked Sims whether he thinks that Conway actually agrees with her husband at the end of the day.
“I don’t know. That is, the great, you know, kind of the rumor that goes around in D.C. is that it’s like they’re in cahoots together, it’s a big kind of charade,” Sims said. “I don’t know if that’s true or not.”
Sims’s book, which Trump is reportedly not happy about, hits shelves on Tuesday, but Kellyanne Conway has already issued a response, which was read on the air by View host Abby Huntsman.
“She said, ‘The real leakers past and present get much more positive press than I do. While it’s rare, I prefer to knife people from the front, so they see it coming,’” Huntsman read aloud.
But despite the bleak picture painted by Sims in his book about a White House full of chaos and backstabbing, Sims said he was proud to work there and gave his opinion when asked whether he thinks Trump is fit to serve.
“I think he is fit to serve,” Sims said, drawing a strong reaction from both hosts and audience. “No, listen, listen. I can disagree with some of the things he does while having seen it firsthand. I can say that he is not unfit, you know what I mean?”
