Fox News's Cavuto fact-checks Trump campaign claim that Harris called Biden a racist: 'She never did'
Shortly after California Sen. Kamala Harris was announced as Joe Biden’s pick for vice president, Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto fact-checked a statement released by President Trump’s campaign claiming, among other things, that Harris had called Biden a racist. The statement is likely alluding to an exchange between Harris and Biden at a debate last summer when they were competing candidates. But in that exchange, Harris said to Biden, “I do not believe you are a racist.” Discussing the Trump campaign statement with Fox News White House correspondent John Roberts, Cavuto was quick to correct the false claim.
“By the way, the real quick clarification I just want to get,” Cavuto said, “the president seems to be saying that Kamala Harris called Joe Biden a racist. She never did.” Roberts then corrected Cavuto, specifying that it was his campaign, not Trump himself, that made the statement.
That statement also claimed that Harris was a radical progressive and that she would try to “appease the anti-police extremists” in the party. Cavuto pointed out that as a prosecutor in California, Harris was anything but what she is being portrayed as in the statement.
“As a former prosecutor, if anything, Kamala Harris was getting heat from many African Americans with the party and others,” Cavuto said. “She was a little too tough on crime and that sort of thing … and that it would negate her being a running mate. So in a way, be careful what you criticize.”
Despite Harris’s past friction with progressives, Roberts predicted the Trump campaign would continue to try to paint a different picture of her.
“She ran afoul of progressives, and yet the Trump campaign is portraying her as someone who is adherent to progressive ideology. Not just progressive ideology, but radical left ideology,” Roberts said. “So they’re painting her as way left of what people in the Democratic Party have. But that’s the way that Trump is going to fight this campaign.”
And just hours later on Hannity, that’s exactly what Trump did.
“I think she’s, you know, the most liberal person, supposedly, in the Senate,” Trump said. “That’s pretty liberal. But she’s supposed to be the most.”
