Fox News hosts praise Stacey Abrams's State of the Union rebuttal: 'She is clearly a rising star'
Shortly after former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams became the first black woman to deliver a response to the State of the Union address, she was praised by multiple Fox News hosts, including Bret Baier, who described her as “clearly a rising star in the Democratic Party.”
With past State of the Union responses like Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio’s awkward water grab in 2013 and Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Joe Kennedy’s apparently moist mouth from last year used as comparisons, Chris Wallace said the standard for a good response is pretty low, but he thought Abrams delivered a good one.
“There are a lot of Americans who are struggling, and I thought she seemed to get more to what people’s lives are like in the reality,” Wallace said. “Also, she talked about some subjects like education, which the president didn’t talk about at all, or climate change, which the president didn’t talk about at all.”
The Ingraham Angle host Laura Ingraham had positive things to say as well, admitting that it’s “never easy” to give these types of speeches.
“I got to say, Stacey Abrams, I think she did have presence tonight,” Ingraham said. “I think she is much better than some of the people in the last few years.”
In her response, the rising Democratic star Abrams referred to the recent government shutdown as a “stunt” by President Trump and a “disgrace.” Although she was praised for her delivery by Brit Hume: “I found her a person with a lot of presence and she certainly speaks very ably and well.” The guests did not necessarily agree with her overall message.
“I just wonder how her message will resonate with people out there living with, what, record low unemployment,” Hume said. “So I think it was a nice try, but I have my doubts about how effective it was.”
Ingraham was also quick to follow her compliments by saying that Abrams was “presenting an alternative universe” during her speech.
“She did the best I think she could with this economy that’s booming by all accounts,” Ingraham said.
