Fox Orders Comedy Pilots From Lee Daniels and Lil Rel Howery, Josh Safran Musical Drama
Fox has picked up its first three pilots of the season, comedies from Lee Daniels and Lil Rel Howrey, and a musical drama from “Quantico” creator Josh Safran.
“Our People,” a single-camera comedy executive produced Daniels, is an adaptation of the Israeli format “Nevsu: A Young Multi-Cultural Couple” written by “30 Rock” and “Modern Family” alum Vali Chandrasekaran.
The pilot centers on a man from a bombastic African family who doesn’t have a word in their native language for “privacy” and his fiancée from a mid-western family as they try to build a normal life together.
Chandrasekaran will serve as executive producer alongside Pam Williams, Marc Velez, Yossi Vassa, Shai Ben-Atar and Liat Shavit on the series from Lee Daniels Entertainment and Endemol Shine in association with 20th Century Fox Television.

“Rel” is a multi-camera comedy inspired by the life of the “Get Out” star, and will see Howrey play a version of himself trying to rebuild his life on the South Side of Chicago after he learns his wife is having an affair with his own barber.
Howrey will executive produce, star and co-write the pilot with Kevin Barnett and Josh Rabinowitz. Jerrod Carmichael will also serve as executive producer on the 20th Century Fox comedy alongside showrunner Mike Scully.

“Mixtape” hails from Fox and Sue Naegle’s Annapurna Television, and is described as “a romantic musical drama that looks at a disparate group of interconnected people in contemporary Los Angeles through the lens of the music that defines who they are, [capturing] the different stages of love, exploring if time can heal a broken heart and if love can withstand life’s tragedies.”
Safran, whose credits also includes the NBC musical drama “Smash,” will write and executive produce the hourlong drama. Ali Krug is co-executive producer and Annapurna bosses Naegle and Megan Ellison are executive producers.
