Frasier EPs Analyze His Relationship With Son Freddy: It’s Like ‘Frasier Is Arguing With Niles and Martin at Once’
Paramount+’s Frasier revival is returning for Season 2 this month — and it’s digging deeper into two generations of Crane men.
Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane is still rebuilding his relationship with son Freddy, played by Jack Cutmore-Scott, after years of estrangement, and we’ll see Freddy come into his own more this season, executive producer Joe Cristalli tells TVLine. Cutmore-Scott “really hit his stride in Season 2,” he hints, adding that Freddy is filling the role occupied by Frasier’s father Martin (played by the late John Mahoney) on Frasier’s original run. Freddy can “be that person that can put Frasier in his place with some gentle chiding, but is still so charming that you love him for it… Obviously, you don’t want to see Frasier and Freddy just hugging. There’s no fun in that.”

The friction comes from how similar father and son are, Cristalli notes: “They’re very much different people, but they’re also very much the same person. So seeing them get into an argument, it’s basically… It’s Frasier arguing with Niles and Martin at once, right? He’s got the same intellect, and he’s got the same sort of blue-collar, not putting up with the nonsense part of it.”
In Season 2 — premiering Thursday, Sept. 19 with the first two episodes — we’ll see Frasier and his son come to terms with how alike they actually are, fellow EP Chris Harris teases: “Frasier’s the real meddler, but every once in a while, you’re going to see that come out in Freddy… Freddy likes to think of himself as laid-back and very different from Frasier’s heart-on-his-sleeve persona. But actually, Freddy has a lot of his father in him, too, whether he likes it or not. Mostly he doesn’t.”
