Freida Pinto wouldn't work with Woody Allen again: 'I'm not desperate and I never will be'
The actress Freida Pinto was happy for a job in the 2010 Woody Allen movie You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger. At the time, the only other role on her résumé was Slumdog Millionaire, and it gave her the opportunity to work alongside Josh Brolin, who taught her the importance for an actor of relaxing between takes.
Still, Pinto says she wouldn’t work with the director of Annie Hall again, because of the sexual abuse allegation that his daughter Dylan has brought against him.
“No. Absolutely not,” Pinto tells The Guardian in an interview to promote her new movie about sex slavery, Love Sonia, which is now out in the United Kingdom. “I wouldn’t work with him, because I’m in solidarity with women who have come out with their stories, whether they are proven or not. I’m just going to stick to what my gut instinct tells me. I’m 34 years old, I’ve worked for 11 years in this industry, I’m not desperate and I will never be desperate.”
Farrow first brought the claim against her father when she was a child in the 1990s. When Allen was awarded with a lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes in 2014, Farrow wrote a piece about her experience for the New York Times that attracted a lot of attention. (Allen has always denied his daughter’s accusations, and he was never charged with any crime in the incident.)
However, a long list of actors has since refused to work with the Oscar winner. Mira Sorvino, Rebecca Hall, Colin Firth, Michael Caine, Greta Gerwig and Timothée Chalamet have also expressed regret that they worked with Allen.
Actors Diane Keaton, Alec Baldwin and Javier Bardem are among Allen’s staunchest supporters.
Pinto noted during the interview that she found some of the characters she has played over the years problematic — they weren’t much more than eye candy — and says that, as a feminist, she would make different career choices today.
