Frustrated late-night hosts call for gun control laws in wake of deadly Las Vegas shooting
Late-night hosts, from Stephen Colbert to James Corden, were unified in their call for some type of gun control legislation in the wake of the horrific Las Vegas shooting.
The Late Show‘s Stephen Colbert said, “Today, the president called this an ‘act of pure evil.’ And I think he’s right. So, what, then, are we willing to do to combat ‘pure evil?’ The answer can’t be nothing. It can’t.”
The Late Late Show‘s James Corden said that while this is a time of mourning, it is also a time of action. The host said, “Some say it’s too early to talk about gun control. For those victims last night, it’s far too late.”
And the hosts didn’t just complain; they offered some suggestions for legislation Congress could propose. Colbert suggested, “Universal background checks — or come up with a better answer. Enforce Obama’s executive order that denied the mentally ill gun purchases — or a better answer. Reinstate the semi-automatic weapons ban — or come up with a better answer. Anything but nothing. Doing nothing is cowardice.”
And seeing that there have been several mass shootings that resulted in “thoughts and prayers” but no new legislation, a frustrated Trevor Noah from The Daily Show said, “So, the people of Las Vegas, I can’t give you thoughts and prayers; I can only say that I’m sorry — sorry that we live in a world where there are people who will put a gun before your lives.”
