Funkmaster Flex has never minced his words; hell, he beefed with the Wu-Tang Clan for 25 years. So, it should be no surprise that he has something to say about “hot garbage” Tommy Richman and his viral track, “Million Dollar Baby.” Funk Flex’s explosive rant went crazy online on Friday (June 7) as fans shared audio from his Hot 97 breakdown of Richman’s latest track—and the DJ was disgusted by the artist’s creation. And best believe, Funkmaster Flex dropped several bombs in between his pointed criticisms aimed at the internet sensation.

“Remember, if you’re someone that likes this song, you are a clown,” he asserted while introducing the song. “I don’t know what the rest of his songs sound like. I don’t even know who Tommy Richman is. It sounds like a shoe store. Now we’re gonna document this hot garbage. We’re gonna play it, though. I know you wanna hear it. I wonder if this is big at clubs.”

“See, this part is deceiving, like it might be a good song. Watch the terrible part as it comes in. You hear the tin can drums?” he adds, speaking about the song’s unassuming yet woozy intro.

But Flex isn’t the only Hip-Hop veteran who’s not impressed by Richman’s popular number. On Monday (June 3), The Joe Budden Podcast discussed the potential summer song for 2024, where most of the crew agreed that it may be Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us.” However, one member of the team opined that the song of the summer may be Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby.” Joe Budden immediately shot down the notion that Richman’s track could have that distinction and stated that the song’s popularity was simply “marketing” at work.

Days after Budden’s dismissal, Tommy took to X/Twitter to post a couple of messages regarding his viral song and some unnamed critics, typing, “million dollar baby wasn’t bout u.”

Regardless of Budden and Flex’s opinions, Tommy Richman does indeed have a hit on his hands. The TikTok viral song debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May as it accumulated 38 million U.S. streams, Luminate reports.

Before you say it, no, Richman isn’t an industry plant. The DMV native has been consistently dropping music for a decade, with his debut album, Alligator, making waves in 2022. But it was when Richman became the first artist to sign to Brent Faiyaz’s ISO Supremacy imprint in partnership with PULSE Records that thrust him into the success we see today. Tommy Richman also appeared on Brent’s latest release, Larger Than Life.
